Road Trip to the Redwoods of CA-Camping, Hiking and Sightseeing!
Details
Let's go on a road trip to the Redwoods of Northern CA for Memorial Day Weekend!! We are going to form carpools and travel down to a campground on the Smith River to camp for 3 nights and explore the Redwood forests of the area, as well as opportunities to visit ocean beaches and sand dunes. Sound fun? Read on.
First off, everyone goes on the waiting list until you have paid me $25 for camping fees, and to hold your spot. Please make sure your messaging is enabled for meetup and then DM me and I will give you the payment details.
We will get our car pools figured out beforehand. Once this is accomplished, we will travel to Ruby Van Deventer County Park on Friday. It sits right on the Smith River and has several large redwood trees right in the campground. This is where we will camp for 3 nights. The campground is first come first served, but is not used much. It would still be nice if at least one vehicle can get there early to secure some spots. We will spend Friday setting up camp, eating and relaxing.
On Saturday we will head to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. there are 3 different hikes here, and I think we can do all of them. Stands of huge redwoods are everywhere, it's breathtaking. For lunch, we can picnic or go into the town of Crescent City to eat. we may have time to take a look around, maybe a museum or something. In the afternoon, we can check out Tolowa Dunes State Park and/or Kellog Beach before heading back to camp for an evening of fun by the fire.
On Sunday we will head south and visit Prairie Creek State Park. There are many hikes to choose from here, as well as opportunities to see Roosevelt Elk. There's a chance we can get into Fern Valley which is a very cool area. We will then continue south to Orick and hike in the Lady Bird Johnson Grove, a magnificent stand of redwoods, and if time permits, we can check out Redwood Creek. We will then make our way back to camp. Depending on the timing, we can stop for dinner on the way back, or just eat back in camp.
On Monday, we pack up and head home. Driving 101 is always more scenic than I-5. If anyone is interested, we can make a quick stop or two on the way home, including grabbing lunch somewhere. Drive time is a little over 5 hours with minimal stops. I personally take about 7 hours so that I can meander down the coast.
