Space Available-Beginner Backpacking Trip-Lower Deschutes River
Details
Please read all the way to the bottom to see how to get on the going list for this trip.
Well, here we go! I think a great place to go for an overnight trip to test our gear out would be along the lower Deschutes River Trail. For this trip we will camp at a campground the first night to get acquainted, get our gear and food sorted and ask questions. On Saturday we will put on our packs and hike around 4 to 5 miles to some tent sites along the river at Snake in the Box Camp. On Sunday we pack up and get back to the cars. We can probably get some food in Maupin on the way back to Portland if anyone is interested.
We are going to be camping at Macks Canyon on Friday. This is the last campground on the road, and this is where we pick up the trail on Saturday. Get here when you can, its first come first served. As far as I remember we pay at the camp, so bring some cash. I highly recommend carpooling, so please post on here if you need or can provide a ride. Try to arrive before night fall, if possible, to discuss and organize gear, we will also have some time in the morning to do this. We will head out to backpack at around 10am. There are several campsites showing on my hiking app, but it looks like we should try to get to Snake in the Box Camping area. We will setup camp, explore and relax. Sunday we pack up and meander back to our cars and on towards town.
Bring all gear and food and water for camping and backpacking for the duration of the trip. I think Macks Canyon is a dry camp, so please bring enough water. Also bring some firewood for Friday night if you can.
If you need gear, or have gear to lend out, please post here. I have extra packs and sleeping pads and probably a sleeping bag. We can share things like stoves and cooking pots and water filtration devices, so don't go buying gear just for the trip.
I'm putting everyone on the waitlist first, if you really want to go on the trip, then message me and I'll move you to going. If you have questions, then please ask.
