What we’re about

Welcome to the Python Learners & Builders Group!

This group is for anyone currently learning Python — whether you're just starting out or already coding confidently. We meet virtually once a week and in person once a month to support each other, share knowledge, and collaborate on projects. There are no fees to attend our workshops.

All skill levels are welcome. At the start of each session, members team up based on skill level or shared interests. We then create Zoom breakout rooms (small virtual spaces for focused discussion or collaboration) to work in smaller groups.

Whether you're a complete beginner, a self-taught programmer, or an experienced developer, there's a place for you here. Bring a project, an idea, or a question — or just come to learn. If you want feedback on code, help debugging, or advice on how to get started, we’ve got you covered.

We're diving into PyArrow, a Python library for working with columnar data formats. Whether you're new to data engineering or curious about how to process large datasets efficiently, this will be a great hands-on learning opportunity.

Join a Real Open-Source Project. Ever wonder what it’s like to join a real software development team? Now’s your chance. We’re not just running tutorials — we’re building something real, and you’re invited to help.

Current Project: A Civic Voting App. We're building a web application that helps people understand and engage with legislation at the national, state, and local levels. Using the OpenAI API, the app summarizes complex bills into clear, readable language so citizens can make informed decisions. Key Features for Users: View simplified versions of real bills Highlight parts they agree (green), disagree (red), or feel neutral about (grey)
Get a personalized summary of their stance contribute to a live public sentiment dashboard

Tech Stack: Python with Django for backend development SQL for data storage and analysis OpenAI API for summarizing and extracting ideas from legislative text
HTML/CSS/JavaScript for a clean, accessible user interface. What We’ll Be Doing Together: Designing models for bills, summaries, and user input. Integrating OpenAI to generate real-time summaries, building interactive voting and feedback interfaces, developing sentiment analysis tools based on user input, managing user roles, authentication, and security, reviewing each other’s code and deploying updates.

This is your chance to contribute to a real open-source project with real impact. You'll gain hands-on experience, meet fellow developers, and see your work come to life.
