What we’re about
THEY are a loose group of poets who call themselves “Really Bad Poets.” But no, explains Alex Uypuanco, that is not necessarily a play for coming out with bad poems because for the group, “bad” means “good.” They banded together two years ago at the birthday party of Chai Fonacier who is considered the group’s “resident anger.” The original Bad Poets all came from another group called Arts Kolektib, a performing arts group, which meets every third Thursday of the month at Handuraw; and for their poetry session, they meet every third Sunday of the month at The Outpost reading either their own poems or someone else’s, whether in English or in the dialect. Have something to report? Tell us in text, photos or videos. The group has no organizational structure, no roster of membership, and anyone can join in the poetry reading gig. There is also no criticism. Alex said, “We just want to create an environment that’s very comfortable for anyone who wants to write, read, listen to poetry. We want to demystify poetry: a lot of people love poetry but are intimidated. We take everything seriously but don’t do it seriously.” By Jenara Regis Newman Published in the Sun.Star Cebu newspaper on February 28, 2012.
