The Retro Risqué Reading Club Kickoff meeting

Details

We'll go over a few things together like how often we'll meet. Which of the books we'll read first, and how we'll have interesting and deep discussions about the book.

If we get at least 10 people to RSVP by May 26th, I will find a place to host it.

Some ideas I have are a pleasantly private lounge, coffee shop, or hotel bar within walking distance of a metro stop. If you have suggestions please let me know.

I've spun up a list of titles that are at least 40 years old and are considered classics so we make sure we're spending our time on some of best writing.

There are many classics that are not on the list because they are either long, difficult to read or both (Don Juan, Madame Bovary, Clarissa, etc).

This is so, at first, we get the most pleasure with the least effort but maybe we consider adding something longer and harder later. Or maybe we read about the great seducers of history like Marquis de Sade, Lord Byron or Casanova. Who knows..

Here's the list:

  • Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
  • The Art of Love by Ovid
  • The Seducer's Diary by Søren Kierkegaard
  • The Unbearable Lightness of Being: A Novel by Milan Kundera
  • A Sport and a Pastime: A Novel by James Salter
  • The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain
  • Nine and a Half Weeks: A Memoir of a Love Affair by Elizabeth McNeill
  • Marjorie Morningstar by Herman Wouk
  • Story of O: A Novel by Pauline Reage
  • Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller
  • Lady Chatterley's Lover - D. H. Lawrence
  • Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos
