Details

This is a classical music concert with choral & orchestral fireworks with Handel's Coronation Anthems and Haydn's "Lord Nelson" Mass.

Joseph Haydn’s Mass No. 11 in D minor, popularly known as the "Lord Nelson Mass" (Missa in Angustiis), is considered one of his greatest choral masterpieces,

  1. Composition: Written in 1798, its original title Missa in Angustiis ("Mass for troubled times") reflects the political instability in Europe during the Napoleonic Wars ,
  2. Naming: It became associated with Admiral Horatio Nelson following his decisive victory over Napoleon's fleet at the Battle of the Nile. Nelson later visited the Esterházy court, where the mass was performed in his honor.
  3. Instrumentation: Due to financial constraints, Haydn originally scored the work for a unique ensemble of strings, trumpets, timpani, and organ, omitting woodwinds. This creates a distinct, austere, and driving "martial" sound.
  4. Structure: The work is a "Missale solemnis" consisting of the standard Ordinary of the Mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei.
