Spring has sprung! Waking us from our winter slumber. So it seems fitting that our next book will be The Enchanted by British-Australian writer Elizabeth von Arnim.

The novel is about four English women who escape their dreary lives for a month-long holiday at a medieval castle on the Italian Riviera, finding rejuvenation, friendship, and love amidst the beauty of their surroundings. The story follows the transformation of the dissimilar women—the unhappy housewives Lotty Wilkins and Rose Arbuthnot, the bored socialite Lady Caroline Dester, and the waspish Mrs. Fisher—as they shed their inhibitions and rediscover happiness in the Italian spring. The novel was a bestseller, inspired by von Arnim's own trip, and sparked a tourism craze for Portofino, Italy.
