Hi all you readaholics!
For our first great Russian novel to read and discuss we voted on Anna Karenina by Tolstoy.
We'll have a discussion around the following 3 questions:
- Is Anna a tragic victim of her time, or the author of her own downfall?
- Which relationship in the novel feels the most authentic or emotionally true—Anna and Vronsky, Levin and Kitty, or another? Why?
- What role does social status and public perception play in how the characters make decisions?
Right now, we are meeting at the Globe Bookstore on September 4th at 19:00 - which gives us 6 weeks to read this epic!
Even if you didn't join the kickoff meeting we'd love to hear what you think. I'm going to The Globe to get us copies of the book. If you let me know by July 26th, I am happy to make sure you're reading the same translation that the rest of us are. Just let me know by messaging me here.
I'm looking forward to a lively chat with all of you in about 6 weeks!
Tony
