Discussing "Lolita" by Nabokov
Details
The next book we're reading is centered around a mundane idea and relationship but since it's famous we'll read it.
We're reading Lolita.
(That's two ironic introductions to the events in a row so I will be sincere in the next one...to keep it interesting ;)
We'll have a discussion around the these questions:
- How does Nabokov use Humbert's literary sophistication and unreliable narration to manipulate reader sympathy?
- What role does America itself play in the novel?
- How do we see Dolores Haze as a real person despite Humbert's attempts to transform her into "Lolita"?
If discussing this book in a group setting creates a mixture of uncertainty and excitement - good - you're just like us and the other millions of people who have read it.
Bring an open mind and your opinion - even if it isn't strong one.
I'm looking forward to seeing you there!
Tony
