This week, The Screening Room travels to France for one of the most beautiful—and unsettling—horror films of the 1960s.

After his daughter Christiane is horribly disfigured in an accident, brilliant surgeon Dr. Génessier becomes obsessed with restoring her face. Hidden away at his secluded estate and concealed behind an expressionless white mask, Christiane waits as her father’s increasingly disturbing attempts to “save” her begin to blur the line between devotion and horror.

Eyes Without a Face (Les Yeux sans visage) is unlike a conventional horror movie. Director Georges Franju combines Gothic atmosphere, surgical horror, fairy-tale imagery, and an almost dreamlike elegance to create something simultaneously beautiful and deeply disturbing.

Released in 1960, the film became an influential work of French horror, with the haunting image of Christiane’s white mask becoming one of the genre’s most enduring images.
