AI dev tools are everywhere right now—and so is the hype. Are developers on the verge of being replaced, or is this just another bubble waiting to burst? I won’t claim to know the future, but after 20+ years as a software craftsman, I do know what’s worked for me with AI tools—and where they’ve fallen flat.
In this presentation, we’ll cut through the bold claims of AI evangelists, weigh the arguments that it’s all just hype, and then explore the messy reality in between. We'll cover some of the use cases I've encountered where AI tools have genuinely helped me out, and others where it's taken me down a rabbit hole or wasted my time. We'll talk about how AI fits with practices like TDD, pair/mob programming, refactoring, and writing quality, maintainable code. Along the way, we’ll look for a middle ground where AI proves genuinely useful without being either magic or mirage.
