Songwriting I: Lyrics Seminar

Join musician/songwriter/producer Neel Modi (http://neelmodi.com/category/music/) for an evening packed with practical tips, philosophical insights, and a variety of tools to help you write better songs, or write your first! Neel is a drummer, keyboardist, and can play about three-and-a-half chords on the guitar – very poorly. He’s been writing music in one form or another for over 25 years, including everything from quirky instrumental pieces to rock, pop, dance, and industrial songs. Neel is also co-host of Song Talk Radio (http://www.songtalk.ca/) where three guys talk to a different songwriter every week about their songs.

During the Lyrics Seminar, Neel will use illustrative examples and simple exercises to demonstrate the tools for effective and emotional lyric writing. No prior songwriting experience is necessary, and even experienced songwriters will get something out of Neel’s seminar.

Topics will include:

• Writing from the heart vs. from the head

• What’s the big (or small) idea?

• Point of view

• Rhyming

• Narrative

• Song Structure

• Dealing with writer’s block
