Stephen King Book Club: From A Buick 8
Details
Our next read is From a Buick 8, released September 24, 2002. This is the second Stephen King novel about a car, the first being Christine, published in 1983. The title of the book comes from Bob Dylan's song, "From A Buick 6".
I love reading about how SK came up with the ideas for his books. In 1999, SK was driving from Florida to Maine and stopped at a gas station. He went around the back to use the bathroom and slipped on the ice and fell down a bank and almost went into a swollen stream- this is what gave SK the idea for the gas station incident in the book. He basically had the novel by the time he got home and had a draft completed in a couple of months. Well, shortly after finishing the draft, SK was hit by a van, and we know he suffered greatly from the accident and, as a result, didn't finish this book until two years after the accident.
The novel is about a Buick with an interesting history told by members of Troop D, a Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Western Pennsylvania. After a drunk driver kills a member of Troop D, Curtis Wilcox, his son, Ned, begins to visit the barracks and takes an interest in the old Buick kept in a shed by his father. A lot of weird things have happened while the car has been in storage- let's find out together, what kind of things, and why Curtis held on to it for so long, and what does Ned think about it?
I will send out the Zoom link a few minutes before the meeting.
