Did you know that many famous artists have worked in both oil and watercolor?
Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, and William Turner painted in both oils and watercolor, just to name a few.
In this 35 minute, live online lecture, Teaching Studios Instructor Eric Santoli will discuss his own painting practice and methods, materials, and techniques for painting in both oils or watercolor. What are some processes for beginning a painting? Eric will discuss underpainting with a grisaille or a brunaille, dead-coloring, applying an imprimatura, and starting with the alla prima (direct) method.
Principles, philosophies, materials, and techniques will be discussed in brief along with visuals of art historical examples. This lecture will give you some insight into the principle-based method of teaching that Eric uses to instruct his students.
Santoli is a brand ambassador with Natural Pigments and very knowledgeable about the materiality of paint. All questions are welcome at the end of the lecture, for the final 10 minutes.
