18th Toronto Meetup – Fail Closed Guardrails for AI in Payments

Can AI be trusted to make decisions in payment workflows where even a small error can have financial consequences?

AI models are probabilistic, but payment systems demand precision, accountability, and auditable outcomes. As AI becomes part of financial workflows, guardrails are essential to ensure that models operate within defined boundaries and that every action remains safe and verifiable.

At The Test Tribe’s 18th Toronto Meetup, Soujanya Kota will explore how guardrails can make AI safer for payment systems, using a live demonstration of a bank-to-bank funding transfer to show how controls can protect critical financial operations.

Session - Fail Closed Guardrails for AI in Payments
Speaker: Soujanya Kota, QA Leader

Soujanya is a QA leader with 21 years of experience, including over 14 years in banking and payments. She leads quality for large payment programs and builds AI-enabled delivery models that combine Generative AI, Playwright automation, and CI/CD quality gates.

With experience in global team leadership and release readiness reporting, she focuses on bringing engineering discipline, reliability, and accountability into complex financial technology environments.

In this session, Soujanya will demonstrate how guardrails control what goes into an AI model, what comes out, and which actions it is allowed to take. Through a live bank-to-bank funding transfer demonstration, she will show why payment workflows need strict controls and how a fail-closed approach helps prevent unsafe or unauthorised outcomes.

The session will cover:

  • Understanding AI Guardrails: Exploring how controls around AI models validate inputs, outputs, and actions to keep payment workflows within defined boundaries.
  • Grounding Every Transfer: Ensuring that every payment transfer is validated against the original payment details.
  • Fail-Closed Principles: Understanding why payment systems must default to blocking an action when validation or safety checks fail.
  • Practical Demonstration: Seeing how guardrails work in a bank-to-bank funding transfer scenario.
