This is the birth of a new profession: the Thinker.
True thinking — deliberate, slow, critical, and humane — has become a rarity. The younger generations, and many adults too, have become so enmeshed in screens and instant gratification that the muscle of independent thought is atrophying. We are always connected, but seldom conscious.
Even the calculator began this process — externalizing thought, eroding our cognitive confidence. Now AI continues it, offering not just answers, but ready-made meaning. And yet, the more we outsource our thought, the more hollow we become. Convenience is not wisdom.
The Thinker, then, is not a profession of the past — it is the profession of the future.
It’s time we recognise thinking itself as a discipline, a craft, a vital societal role. Not everyone will be one, but all will need them.
