Wokeism refers to a broad social and political awareness of systemic injustices, especially around issues like racism, sexism, colonialism, LGBTQ+ rights, and other forms of inequality. The term “woke” originally emerged from African American Vernacular English to describe being awake to racial injustice, but in recent years it has expanded—and been co-opted—to describe a wider cultural movement focused on progressive values and identity politics. Supporters view wokeism as a necessary and ongoing effort to address historical wrongs and promote social equity. Critics, however, often argue that it can lead to overreach, groupthink, or a culture of censorship, sometimes labeling it as performative or intolerant of dissent.

  • In what ways has wokeism contributed positively to social awareness and justice?
  • Critics argue that wokeism can sometimes lead to censorship or "cancel culture." Is this a fair critique?
  • Can a focus on wokeism's identity categories inadvertently deepen social divisions rather than promote unity?
  • Has the fear of being labeled offensive or “not woke enough” led to a chilling effect in classrooms, workplaces, or creative spaces?
  • To what extent does woke culture rely on moral absolutism, and is that compatible with democratic pluralism?
