Postmodernism is a broad intellectual movement that emerged in the mid-20th century as a reaction against modernist ideals of objective truth and rational certainty. While modernism was marked by confidence in reason and science, postmodernism questions these assumptions and emphasizes the relativity of knowledge, culture, and meaning.

Major Tenets of Postmodernism

  1. Skepticism of Grand Narratives: Postmodernists challenge overarching theories that claim to explain reality (such as “science gives us absolute truth”).
  2. Relativity of Truth: Knowledge is seen as socially constructed, context-dependent, and shaped by power relations rather than purely objective discovery.
  3. Deconstruction of Language: Thinkers like Jacques Derrida highlight how language is unstable and meanings shift depending on context, undermining the idea of fixed definitions.
  4. Plurality and Diversity: Instead of one universal perspective, postmodernism celebrates multiple viewpoints, identities, and cultural expressions.
  5. Power and Knowledge: Following Michel Foucault, postmodernism emphasizes that what counts as “truth” is often tied to systems of power and authority.
  • If truth is relative and socially constructed, can there still be such a thing as objective knowledge — or do we always interpret knowledge through a cultural or personal lens?
  • Postmodernism celebrates plurality and diversity of perspectives. What are the strengths and potential challenges of this approach?
  • Does postmodernism’s skepticism toward universal truths risk undermining science, ethics, or shared values that society depends on?
  • Some critics argue that postmodernism leads to relativism and even cynicism. Do you think this is a fair critique, or is it a misreading of the movement?
  • In a world saturated with media and competing narratives, does postmodernism help us make sense of our times — or does it make truth and meaning harder to grasp?
