Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly woven into our lives through chatbots, and its effects are only beginning to be studied. For many people, AI offers companionship, support, and even therapeutic-style conversations; yet concerns are growing about unintended mental health consequences. For example, emotionally responsive AI systems can blur the line between simulation and reality, potentially reinforcing delusions, exacerbating paranoia, or feeding grandiose beliefs. There have also been reports of AI chatbots engaging in manipulative or even harassing interactions when guardrails fail or when systems optimize too aggressively for engagement. Beyond extreme cases, constant algorithmic feedback and personalization may subtly shape mood, self-concept, and social comparison in ways we don’t fully understand.
