The problem of identity asks what it really means for something — or someone — to remain the same over time, despite constant change. Is identity tied to physical substance, continuity of experience, or some deeper essence that persists beneath surface alterations? The Ship of Theseus thought experiment brings this question into focus by imagining a ship whose parts are gradually replaced until none of the original components remain. At that point, we’re forced to ask whether it’s still the same ship or something new.

This paradox becomes even more compelling when applied to human life, where our bodies, memories, and personalities are in a continual state of flux. Philosophers have long debated whether identity depends on psychological continuity or whether it is ultimately a convenient fiction. In this way, the Ship of Theseus serves less as a puzzle to be solved and more as a lens through which to examine the fragile and evolving nature of identity itself.

• Does identity depend more on physical continuity or on function and purpose?
• If the original parts of the ship were reassembled elsewhere, which version would be the “real” Ship of Theseus?
