Mullholand Drive: Destiny, Identity and Circular Time (Film Discussion)

You’ve said before you believe in reincarnation. Is it anything to do with Karma, the wheel of life, with rebirth? “It could be.” Then: “You know there’s, ah, all sorts of symbols of beautiful transformations, like the cocoon into the butterfly. David Lynch is arguing for a radical and dark determinism, according to which people in life, as in films, play roles that they are not in control of. By no means will that make life a dull endeavor, as destiny still has to be found out. (Frank Wittchow)

We all seek meaning in our lives and dread futility. Philosophy doesn't provide facile answers, but the philosophical quest to make sense of our fleeting lives is one that we all share.

This group will explore possible answers by looking at a mixture of approaches. Not only philosophical writing, but also literature, history, poetry and films.

The organizer is not an expert in any of these writers but has a long experience in organizing similar meetings. He also has an Oxford PhD in European History as well as a Cambridge MPhil on the same discipline. He currently teaches foreign languages.

Meetings will be on Fridays at 17:00 EST on Zoom.
