Details
FYI TO PEOPLE NEW TO THE GROUP
This group is conducting an in-depth analysis of the text and discussion is centered on that. We always welcome newcomers who want to learn about Kant, but ours is not the place for general philosophy discussion. I do reserve thirty minutes near the end for broader discussion, so save these comments for then OR join me early before the meeting starts if you have general comments or questions.
IN OUR LAST MEETING
So this dialectic of the aesthetic which we just read involved all three critiques. It demonstrates how difficult this third critique is to understand without some knowledge of the first two. Here's were the highlights.
- There are ideas that correspond to aesthetic judgment and ideas that correspond to practical judgment.
- Aesthetic ideas can be demonstrated, but not explained, while transcendent ideas can be explained but not demonstrated.
- To demonstrate means to show in intuition.
- In order for a judgment to be communicated, it must be based on some principle that grounds understanding.
- Aesthetic judgment is based on a subjective universal a priori principle.
