Global Perspectives on Public Philosophy: A Conference (Day 3)

Interest in public philosophy is as robust as it has been in recent memory. But the public philosophy community is still fragmented and atomized, within and especially across borders. This conference aims to help remedy this situation. It brings together public philosophers working across borders and outside of the Anglo North American world to address several timely questions.

• What new forms is public philosophy taking across the globe?
• What opportunities and challenges do different cultural and national contexts
  present for public philosophers?
• How can public philosophers bring together communities across national, cultural, and political divides?
• What forms of global solidarity between public philosophers are most needed now?

The Public Philosophy Network (PPN) promotes philosophy that engages issues of public concern and works collaboratively with civic and professional communities. PPN is a non-profit professional organization for philosophers, philosophically-minded practitioners, and practitioners who work (or would like to work) with philosophers (such as NGO and nonprofit leaders, grassroots activists, scientists, government and agency leaders, and so on.)

Our Mission

• to support philosophers who use their concepts and skills to serve communities outside of academia and to make positive changes in society
• to reflect on how philosophy is transformed by various types of public engagement
• to support institutional changes supportive of publicly engaged work

Philosophers engage the public by working with professionals in government, business, and healthcare, promoting community discussions, teaching in schools and prisons, and writing for the popular press.

The PPN supports philosophers by running skill-building workshops, organizing scholarly conferences, providing mentoring, facilitating network-building, and assisting with projects.
