Is the human race completely hopeless, or is there still reason to hope?

This is a group meeting to discuss the question posed in the title. First, what is meant by hopeless? Assuming that the human race is responsible for the quality of human life, both that of individuals and that of the race as a whole, if the majority is living badly, then we are all responsible, just as we are all responsible if the majority is living relatively well. But perhaps one could claim that a good life is possible only for a minority, and anyone who can make a reasonable argument for the claim is free to do so, just as one could also claim that an individual is responsible for the quality of only their own life, and in no way responsible for the lives of others, and again, anyone is free to present an argument for the claim. And it is reasonable to ask whether the human race is hopeless. Faced with climate change, the decline of liberal democracies, the huge disparity in material wealth, and the precarious state of the international political order, despite the best efforts of a small number of individuals, nothing much is being done; indeed, there is not really a lot of concern, but still, the human race is responsible. And again, one might believe that climate change poses no threat, that liberal democracy is not the best form of government, that the working class is better off starving, and so on, and if anyone can make a persuasive argument, you have the floor. I will choose the topic for discussion for each meeting, and I intend to recommend articles, podcasts, and videos which will help provide a focus for the discussions. The first meeting will consist of a detailed introduction and a conversation about which topics would be most interesting, and, provided we have sufficient time, I will also have a good topic prepared for the first discussion.
