Imagination – Where and Why is it?

Every first Sunday of the month, Ronald Green hosts a discussion attended by people from many countries. We discuss a range of philosophical issues that may include history, science, art, psychology, sociology, and more. The mix of international attendees and ideas from various countries makes for lively (and sometimes controversial) discussions.
The meetings are for the curious open to new ideas and willing to share. And also for those who just want to listen.

This time we will discuss "Imagination", something that we all have in one form or another. Obviously, imagination is necessary. But why? Presumably, imagination is in the mind and of the mind, yet it manifests itself in the world with real effects. But why is it and is it necessary?

Not surprisingly, then, Imagination has an unusually long and rich philosophical history, from Plato to the present day.
Imagination is difficult to pin down, to even place it within an “is”. It takes an awkward hovering place between knowing, possibly knowing and not knowing, between imagined reality and possible reality.

Philosophy, science, art, literature, history... are just some of the strands that link imagination to thoughts about existence, knowledge, absence and reality.
Perhaps, the more we imagine what imagination might be, the more we understand about ourselves in the world.
