Details

I have been facilitating a monthly support space for professionals working in emotionally demanding roles for a while now, and I realised there is one important detail about the group that I have probably forgotten to mention, a very important selling point...

Perhaps I should have led with the fact that attendees may be treated to authentic Sri Lankan snacks, and sometimes cake and chocolate! :) So yes, one unexpected benefit of the in-person group is that my Sri Lankan and Danish roots occasionally make an appearance on the table. In practical terms, that means Sri Lankan moorish snacks and, every now and then, cake and chocolate the Danish way, with a touch of hygge.

In all seriousness, this will be a professional but supportive space for professionals who regularly support people through distress, adversity, trauma, loss and crisis. The main thing would be that the focus wouldn't be on those you support, but actually on you.

Are you feeling emotionally drained after work? Holding emotional or intense client work, week after week, can take a toll on us, even when we are very passionate about what we do. I believe this is the part of our work, we don't talk enough about. That is why I created this space for professionals working in emotionally demanding roles.

We will explore the importance of self-care for professionals who support others, strategies for managing your own emotional wellbeing. We would also look at how you can continue to foster compassion and resilience in your work, while maintaining healthy boundaries, recognising the signs of burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. We will also look at when to step back, slow down or say no. All which is absolutely necessary in the work we do.

If you are a therapist, you probably already have supervision, consultation groups, CPD commitments and a busy caseload, so I just want to make it clear that this is none of that. While all those things are important, they are often centred around your clients and your professional practice, whereas this is for you.

A space for therapists and other helping professionals carrying the emotional weight of trauma work. A space to reflect, connect, journal, learn and engage in selfcare practices. Time carved out just for you, to be reminded that looking after yourself is not a luxury but an essential part of being able to continue supporting others well....And yes, there may be snacks. :)

If this sounds like something that would be helpful, feel free to get in touch. The next in-person monthly group in Sheffield will be next week: Tuesday 9th. However, there is also a separate group via zoom on Wednesday for those who can't attend in person. Please get in touch here or email contact@steppingstonespsychology.com
