"One-Term Presidents: Those Who Blew It, Those Who Finished the Job Ahead of Schedule, and Those Who Just Kinda Died"
Some were doomed by circumstance, some were wildly unpopular, and some were actually GOATed with the sauce? Which one-termer got what they deserved, which one deserved/deserves a second chance?
Come prepared with your case file: pick a couple four-year boyz and be ready to make your case (obscure picks encouraged). No "required reading" but highly recommend the following:
-"Presidential," the podcast
-"American Elections," the podcast
-"One-Term US Presidents," a ThoughtCo article
-"Accidental Presidents," by Jared Cohen (if you have like a lot of time)
Some discussion prompts (but also bring your own if you're cool):
-What made them not seek re-election, if that was their choice? What would their second term have looked like?
-What made them lose? What if they ran in a different era?
-How do we judge a presidency? What's a "good president"?
-Do you wanna go to Clark Street Diner after this?
We're meeting at Greek Theater Parking Lot F, which is free and ample parking most mornings. The trailhead is right across the street by the bus stop. I think it's technically called Riverside Trails. It starts steep, calms down, and then gets steep again in the second half--but if folks are winded, it is a nice "out and back" if you turn around at the little hut halfway through. Bring water, sunscreen, maybe a hat if you're feeling frisky.
The point here is to meet cool, smart people who share our interests, so don't be too cool to make a friend out there. We are all nerds, I assure you there is nobody to impress at the Twentysomething American History Hiking Club.
