This is the second of two linked presentations, this one an in-person walkabout centered on the National Mall, Pennsylvania Avenue, and the Capitol.

The Territory of Columbia -- “the Federal City” -- was carved out of two Southern states to demonstrate the political might of the new nation’s investment in its slaver economy. The location -- swampy ground shared by two Southern colony / states was a “compromise” between North and South over War Debt and the power of slavery.

There was no compromise: the North traded away New York and Philadelphia as locations for the Capital and the Southern colonizers paraded the power of slavery through the streets within sight of the Federal Capital. Between 1800-1860 more than 1,000,000 men, women, and children -- all born in the colonies / United States -- were transported through and kept penned in Washington, DC, an area one commentator termed "The greatest slave depot in the nation."

This examination of the laws, practices, social customs, and persons that make The Federal City is part of a wider project, examining Anglo-colonial enslavement practice and (White) race apartheid.

The Sunday afternoon walkabout begins at the entrance to the Enid Haupt Garden at The Smithsonian Castle (built by enslaved descendants of George Washington's enslaved); we walk from the mall to 7th street, north to Pennsyvlvania, to "the Great Slave Emporium"; we follow the money of enslavement to the Capitol, and then return to our starting point, past the infamous slave pits of this area.
