The famed Backbone Trail will carry us through Hondo Canyon and up to Saddle Peak, with the emphasis on up. This is a workout, but well worth the effort, as we pass a stream, unique pink rock formations, rock pools, and perhaps a waterfall on our way to sweeping views of the ocean and San Fernando Valley. The first part of the trail is exposed, then we'll find cover in groves of oaks and California Bays.
The hike is an out and back, 4.2 miles each way, rising gently to 1500 feet.
Directions:
Take the 101 freeway to Topanga Canyon Blvd. Head south 5 miles or so to the intersection with Old Topanga Canyon Road. You will be right in the middle of the Topanga commercial area (next to the Inn of the Seventh Ray restaurant) . Turn right on Old Topanga. Go 1/4 mile to the trailhead.
The trailhead is on the left hand side. It's not very clearly marked but there is parking on the dirt there.
