It looks like we might get a hiking window in our suddenly sodden state. This trail is one of the best around in holding up to the rain, so let's puddle jump while we can.

Of all the gentler hikes (that aren't on a beach), this one offers the best ocean views. Usually, we have to climb a mountain to get a view as spectacular as this, but why not avail ourselves of modern conveniences and drive to the top?

The route is practically weather proof. If the sun is out, we'll be treated to some marvelous ocean views. If the marine layer settles in, we'll be treated to haunting atmospherics among the sandstone giants of Mesa Peak. Either way, it's a treat.

The hike will take us along Mesa Peak Motorway from Corral Canyon, skipping the usual strenuous climb to the Motorway from Malibu Canyon Road that the regulars and PMers kill themselves on. We’ll roller coaster along open fire road on our way to about 800’ of total elevation gain and loss (smaller chunks that are doable for anyone who comes out regularly), pass Little Moab (a giant sandstone sculpture garden), and turn back when we've had enough magnificence -between 5 and 6 miles total, whatever the consensus is.

The entire hike is exposed- it can be windy, damp from the marine layer, or warm from the sun. The best thing to do is bring gear for whatever is up there, and leave what you don't need in the car. The path is mostly very firm, but hiking poles are a fine idea if you tend to use them.

This is a gentler hike. We will go at a more moderate pace than a regular Trailblazer hike, and we'll take more breaks. The purpose is to give novice and intermediate hikers who may feel they're not up to a regular hike a chance to get out and experience our beautiful trails. Faster hikers are welcome to come along, with the understanding that the hike is geared toward those who want to go at an easier pace.

Allow extra time for the last leg of the drive to the hike, from PCH up Corral Canyon Rd- it takes 15 or so minutes to get from bottom to top due to the winding road.

Directions:

Corral Canyon Rd. is off PCH, about halfway between Kanan Dume Rd. and Malibu Canyon/Las Virgenes Rd (at the 76 Station- same turn as Solstice Canyon, but stay on Corral Canyon). Turn up Corral Canyon Rd. off PCH, away from the ocean. Drive 5 miles to the top, park in the dirt lot at the end of the road. Corral Canyon is not a through road, so if you drive off a cliff, you've gone too far.
