Change of Venue due to Fire Closures: Sherwood Forest Instead, sorta Gentler

Details

The Franklin Fire response still has lower Kanan Road closed between Mulholland and PCH, so our Newton Canyon route is a no-go. We'll fall back on an old favorite instead, Sherwood Forest.

If you're already on the hike, you still are for Thursday. If you can't make Thursday's version, please change your RSVP to allow those on the waitlist to attend.

We'll park on Los Padres instead of the Los Robles Trail lot. This is closer to 101, but still south on Moorpark Road. See the directions, below.

We'll walk from the Los Padres trailhead down Moorpark Road, and go south to the Lily Tomlin Bench, at which point we'll climb up to the meadow and scenic overlook. We'll continue eastward on the Los Robles Trail, up and over the scenic overlook, to the small peak in the South Ranch Open Space, then return to the fire road, and descend to the entrance to the Los Padres Trail. Our final mileage will be through the lush oak grove, and back out to the cars. This is a total of 5 miles, and an elevation gain and loss of 934'.

Optional lunch at Snapper Jack's, Moorpark and Janss Roads, about 2 miles north.

Please view our "About" page for how we run our hikes.
Restrictions apply for your safety and ours:

  • Don't show up unless you're on the "Attending" list
  • Unregistered or waitlisted will be turned away
  • No "Plus Ones" on this hike
  • Plan on completing the entire hike or please find an alternative hike that better suits your hiking level.
  • No dogs allowed.

Directions:

Exit 101 at Moorpark Road, and head south 4/10 mile to Los Padres Drive. Turn left, and park near the trailhead.

Afterwards, to get to Snapper Jack, drive north on Moorpark Road 2 miles, turn right onto Janss, and then turn right into the parking lot.

Parking is free.

Bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and wear sturdy shoes and a sun hat. Please consider bringing the 10 essentials ([https://bit.ly/1vB2Avz).](https://bit.ly/1vB2Avz).)
