Details

We'll start from the Las Lajas trailhead on Evening Sky drive in Simi Valley but take a different route from past hikes to the Coquina mine. At the bottom of the hill, we'll turn left to catch the Marr Ranch trail. The Marr Ranch trail climbs giving us great views as we head to the turnoff for the mine. This was a strip-mining operation that started in 1929 and ceased in year 1935. Limestone was mined here for an extremely pure form of Calcium Carbonate (Calcite CaCO3). As you start to travel further up the mine trail, you'll find abandon mining equipment with large boulders of both limestone and fossils. The mine trail will end at the mining site with the largest mining equipment abandoned there. We'll return using the Marr Ranch trail to the Las Lajas trailhead.
The hike is about 7.5 miles with close to 1600 ft of gain.

Directions
In Simi Valley, exit 118 at Yosemite and drive north to Evening Sky Drive, observing all speed limits and stop signs (traffic enforcement can be enthusiastic in this neighborhood). Turn right on Evening Sky and watch for the Las Llajas Trailhead on the left (there is a small kiosk).

Please bring: at least one liter of water, snacks, an extra layer of clothing, a charged cell phone, identification, and sunscreen and anything else you might need on the trail.
