About us
Dear Friends of The Writer’s Gym,
I'm just pleased as punch to present our June event schedule below. We'll continue to host Silent Night Write-Ins most Tuesdays with much gratitude to those of you who made it out to previous sessions. Hope to see you tomorrow and our numbers (and word counts) continue to grow.
We're also offering Writers Workshops every other Thursday, and welcome writers of all stripes and fitness levels to pop in—even (or especially) if you don't consider yourself a writer, but are just curious about what salutary benefits might attend maintaining a consistent writing practice.* Simply submit a piece of writing up to ten pages long at least 48 hours beforehand to info@thewritersgym.studio. Then read everyone else's work and come prepared with notes & reactions to contribute to the discussion. Light refreshments will be served.
As your host and moderator, I'll guide the conversation towards generating as much constructive feedback and literary insight for each writer as possible and close with an opportunity for the heretofore "silent save-the-sound-of-furious-notetaking author" to ask any questions, respond to comments, or simply thank the group for their generous feedback and exercise their right to remain silent with some small gesture indicating that the group should please move onto the next lovely text.
Every other, other Thursday, we'll be hosting Open Mics, so if you workshopped a piece of writing the week before, you'll have plenty of time to revise and rehearse before performing it in front of a live studio audience. These, incidentally, take place in our soundproofed studio (so here's looking at you, singer/songwriters). BYOB for courage!
And exclusively for our lovely members, we'll be hosting a Members Appreciation Lunch on the last Friday of the month as a token of our gratitude for enriching our fledgling community!
Looking a bit further ahead, we're thrilled to be hosting events for the Latino writers group, Somos Life, on the last Sunday of the month, as well as The Williams Asian and Asian American Alumni Network (WAAAAN) to be scheduled sometime towards the end of the month. And as we head into summer, we're diligently putting together programming to provide rising high school seniors with college essay support. Stay tuned!**
Best,
Grant
*Aside from maintaining a consistent writing practice, the value writers derive from workshops might include identifying blind spots in your work, learning to revise, developing critical reading skills, building community, and perhaps most importantly, hearing how real readers experience your work so that you can begin to close the gap between the story you intended to write and the story readers actually experienced.
**Which by the way, as an old friend recently pointed out, "is a reference to TVs and radios that basically don't exist anymore. It's like the record scratch. People know what it means, but have no idea what it means."
