Subplots
Details
Stories rarely behave themselves.
Just when the main plot seems clear, something else starts happening; a relationship shifts, a secret surfaces, a side character takes up space.
These are subplots: the side roads, detours, and parallel tracks that make a story feel alive.
Subplots aren’t there to distract us.
They complicate things, deepen characters, and often say what the main story can’t say out loud. Sometimes they echo the central plot. Sometimes they argue with it. Sometimes they steal the scene.
This Session explores how subplots add texture, surprise, and emotional richness to our stories.
Today, we will:
* define subplots and how they differ from the main plot
* look at film examples where secondary storylines deepen character and theme
* write short scenes that develop a subplot and place it in conversation with the main story
🖊️ No pressure, no perfection. Just curiosity, play, and seeing what else wants to happen.
