See all- Let's Discuss... Banality of evil! The Mad Hatter Hotel, Southwark, London
The banality of evil is a phrase coined by Hannah Arendt. She studied the totalitarian governments and noticed that the evil of totalitarianism is often found in the simple and mundane acts or just "doing your job."
Hannah Arendt outlined how the types of evil that collectives participate in are simple mundane acts. The banal evil doesn't look scary or act out of place. It looks ordinary and common.
What can individuals do to resist participating in systems that enable the banality of evil?
How might Arendt's ideas apply to contemporary issues?
How does the excuse "I'm just following orders" relate to the banality of evil?
