Seems like our economy is increasingly moving towards being a giant rental, subscription and monthly payment services. From shoe subscription by on.com with the slogan "This is the gear you'll never own. Because you subscribe to it. (Like music.)" to cars from Zipcar subscription program.

Mortgages represent an interesting middle ground in this evolving economy. Unlike pure subscriptions, mortgages are designed as a path to ownership, where your monthly payments gradually build equity. However, they still require pledging your future income to obtain something today. With traditional 30-year mortgages, the early years see most of your payment going toward interest rather than principal, creating a lengthy period where you're paying primarily for access rather than building substantial ownership.

Has the shift toward subscription models fundamentally changed our relationship with ownership?

How does the psychology of "access over ownership" affect our financial decision-making?

How might the subscription economy impact economic inequality?
