As a San Diego artist you may have heard about the recent closures of three of our better known artist studio spaces, Glashaus and Union in Logan Heights and Studio Door in North Park. In the case of Glashaus and Union the spaces were created to give artists an affordable space to work on their art in a semi industrial area. From the articles I've read these spaces were closed due to potential building code violations and the challenges involved in bringing the spaces up to code. Research tells me that Studio Door was recently closed due to the building being sold and the subsequent astronomical increase in rent. MANY artists are without a studio space. From the ashes will rise the phoenix.
This group is a call to anyone interested in co organizing and starting up a space like this again. This time with all the building codes met so that it may exist above the board and on the radar for a long time.
Our initial meetings will be for R&D to discuss potential spaces, obstacles, resources and to formulate a plan.
