Chettinad chit-chat @Anjappar Den Haag
Details
Every month in 2026, The Foodie Fellowship will feature a meetup with a different regional cuisine from India or inspired by the cuisines of the Indian subcontinent. In April, we are traveling down south to the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu in South India. Famous for its intensely aromatic spice blends and rich, deeply flavored dishes, this is one of the most distinctive regional cuisines in India.
Rather than simply being “spicy,” Chettinad food is known for its complex layers of flavor, created by roasting and grinding spices such as:
- Black pepper
- Fennel seeds
- Star anise
- Cloves and cinnamon
- Dried red chilies
- Curry leaves
The result is dishes that are bold, fragrant, and wonderfully warming.
Anjappar is famous for authentic Chettinad dishes, and there are many tempting options on the menu. Some highlights include:
🌶️ Chicken Chettinad
A classic dish where chicken is simmered in a roasted masala of spices, curry leaves, and onions. Rich, aromatic, and slightly peppery.
🥩 Mutton Sukka
Tender pieces of goat meat cooked down with spices, shallots, and curry leaves until dry-roasted and intensely flavorful.
🦐 Prawn Masala
Fresh prawns in a spiced onion-tomato gravy packed with Chettinad flavors.
🍗 Pepper Chicken
A stir-fried dish where freshly ground black pepper gives a warm, punchy heat.
🥬 Vegetable Kurma
A fragrant coconut-based curry filled with vegetables and spices.
🥞 Dosas & Parottas
Perfect for dipping into sauces:
- Crispy Masala Dosa filled with spiced potatoes
- Flaky layered Parotta bread
🍚 Biryani
Aromatic rice cooked with spices and meat or vegetables.
And of course, drinks like Mango Lassi or South Indian filter coffee help balance the spices.
