Re: [noladrum] Special Drumming Ceremony

Hey Ya'll,

If July1st is not doable for any of you, but you would be able to come another date, please let me know. I may have to change the date. So far I have received no responses.

Also I would like to clarify what Ty is referring to when she says Kent has been "kicked out" of two drum circles. Although those are my words, it was not for what I regard aberrant behavior. The first was on the basis of the way he looked (multiple layers of clothes, etc) and how he greeted people as we walked up. He sort of greeted everyone while drumming was going on, and he adds extraneous words to what he says so that he is difficult to follow. The leader did not know he was with me and an old man who came with us. She singled Kent out of the three of us and had a her companion lead him out of the area and tell him it was open to only a certain few. (It had been posted as a "therapeutic drum circle"). I went over and her companion explained to me that the leader did not want strange characters just walking up and that she thought he might have been "schizophrenic or something." Even after I explained he was supervised by two of us, she offered only to drum a little sometimes just with us where others would not be threatened, as she believed he just "might get up and do something to one of the other people." I could not believe the degree of ignorance by a person leading what she referred to as "therapeutic drumming."

The second time was simply a community drum circle in which Kent was shaking a caracas he had brought, and the leader came up and snatched it away from him and put it behind his own seat. Then a nicer member of the group gave Kent a drum and the leader came up and removed the drum as well.

Although Kent's behavior is aberrant, it is not dangerous or threatening. If it becomes disruptive, I remove him myself from the area. I say all this to keep you from being frightened of him. The bigger problem is that in a small group of drummers his rhythms are indeed abberant, and so it takes either a big drum circle or a confident drummer to incorporate his dissonance.

I am willing to postpone this event until I have a number of drummers willing to participate in the healing rituals I have in mind for the occasions. Please contact me if you are willing but are confused or concerned by any of this.

Sorry for these lengthy e-mails. This is the end of it. My own email is [address removed]

Hey guys.  I was sent an email ( see below) by one of our members (Jean), hoping that the drumming community could help.  She is currently charged with taking care of a man name Kent (who has occassionally come to our drum circles).  Kent suffers from schizophrenia, and really enjoys drumming... unfortunately, many drum circles have kicked him out because they consider his behavior to be abberant and take no time to understand that it's not his fault and all he really wants is to drum and listen to drumming.  It soothes him.
Jean would like to hold a special drumming ceremony for him at her home on July 1st (Sunday).  Please read the email below, and if you can help to drum, call her at the number below.  I will be there in the early evening.
Hello Ty,

We are so glad to be back with you guys when we can, and I want to thank you for drumming to Kent's aberrant and speedy rhythms and for letting him talk to you about his troubles while drumming. Kent used to play the piano but now everything is a different tempo with little regard for anything but the right notes. The drumming helps to set his mind right again, and I wish we could do it everyday.

I know you said you were doing a Lamplighter ceremony on that date. I am having a celebration/ceremony for Kent starting at about 4. I really hope you can come for a little while before or after your own ceremony. I want to encourage the drummers from this site (or from anywhere) to come and help us with some rhythms for a healing ceremony for him. It will be along the lines of entering and emerging from a caccoon or chrysalis. I want to put him on a clothe and do some rituals over him while drums beat a healing rhythm. Then people will put their hands on him, and we gradually wrap him in the while cloth and lift him up and carry him with a chant and drumming, and finally place him back down with hands over him and human voices humming with drums fading out to silence. If he won't cooperate by reclining, perhaps we can do the same thing with him standing.

I really need some help with this. I hope John comes with his gentle manner that Kent respects and Jared too. I have e-mailed them a few days ago but got no answer. I really hope I can get some of the drummers to come and also talk to me ahead about how we will create this serious but not fearful atmosphere that will reconnect Kent to the group body and the rhythms of nature. I certainly wish you were coming but I need to keep it on a Sunday afternoon.

Can you post a notice for me inviting people to come be a community of witnesses to his transition and what the purpose is for the situation. There will be a number of other activities such as a cleansing of the house and calling forth the distillation of the ancestors at the very beginning. Kent has most of his hallucinations here, so i want to try to rid the bad things from his home. Then we will all write on a prayer cloth and hang in outside and a few more things like that, always drawing attention to his connection to the group body and its witness to its his anguish, and all starting by reminding him of our deliberate intention to join him in ritual journey to reconnect to the heart of the group body and heal himself within that body.

This may be a lot to ask of people but if anyone wishes to help with this, they are better than any physicans who offer their toxic medicine. I would really like to talk to Syl but she did not answer me either through the email on this site.

Thanks so much Ty and wish you could be there on the 1st.
