Join The Melanin Readers Society for our October discussion of The Curse of Hester Gardens by Tamika Thompson.
This haunting horror novel follows Nona McKinley, a mother trying to protect her family in a public housing community shaped by grief, violence, faith, family secrets, and something supernatural that may be refusing to let go. Hester Gardens is more than just a setting. It is a place where the past lingers, the dead may still be present, and the line between a supernatural curse and the real world forces trapping a community becomes increasingly difficult to separate.
The book gives us plenty to talk about, including family, motherhood, gun violence, poverty, faith, community, grief, responsibility, and the meaning of being “cursed.” The novel also uses recurring supernatural elements, including the mysterious blue ball that appears throughout Hester Gardens.
