*Anne Goy’s *Crisscross Binding
(also known as the Secret Belgian Binding)
Invented in the mid-1980s by Belgian bookbinder Anne Goy, the Crisscross Binding was developed as a Western interpretation of Japanese stab-bound structures, with the added advantage of opening flat. At its heart is a beautifully woven hinge that joins the covers and text block, creating a binding that is both practical and visually striking.
Working from Anne Goy's book, we'll explore the full potential of this remarkably versatile structure. Together we'll investigate variations and modifications that enhance both its function and aesthetics, pushing the boundaries of a binding that offers endless opportunities for creative experimentation. Tutor Terrie Reddish
Terrie Reddish is a letterpress printer and bookbinder who works with restored tools and vintage equipment to create fine press books, broadsheets, prints, and three-dimensional paper artworks inspired by historical and contemporary book structures. Her practice brings together traditional craft, thoughtful design, and a deep respect for the material history of the book.
Terrie has studied bookbinding overseas with Australian, American, French and English binders, and teaches bookbinding throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. She is the Editrix of the Association of Book Crafts (NZ) Incorporated and the Chair of the Association of Handcraft Printers, roles that reflect her commitment to supporting and strengthening the book arts community.
Above all, Terrie loves to share what she has learnt. Her workshops are designed to be welcoming, practical, and empowering—giving participants the skills, confidence, and curiosity to continue exploring bookbinding long after the class ends.
