Fundamentals of Bookbinding

Start your bookbinding journey with a day dedicated to the essential skills that underpin every successful binding. You'll learn the fundamentals of cutting, folding, sewing, and gluing paper while creating a series of simple projects, including a concertina, one-sheet book, single-signature pamphlets, and, time permitting, a folded slipcase.

Along the way, you'll discover practical tips and tricks, gain hands-on experience with a range of tools, and develop a better understanding of paper and materials. The more accurately you can cut and fold, the more successful your future bindings will be. Whether you're completely new to bookbinding or looking to strengthen your core skills, this workshop provides a solid foundation for your creative journey.

Tutor Terrie Reddish

Terrie Reddish is a letterpress printer and bookbinder who works with restored tools and vintage equipment to create fine press books, broadsheets, prints, and three-dimensional paper artworks inspired by historical and contemporary book structures. Her practice brings together traditional craft, thoughtful design, and a deep respect for the material history of the book.

Terrie has studied bookbinding overseas with Australian, American, French and English binders, and teaches bookbinding throughout Aotearoa New Zealand. She is the Editrix of the Association of Book Crafts (NZ) Incorporated and the Chair of the Association of Handcraft Printers, roles that reflect her commitment to supporting and strengthening the book arts community.

Above all, Terrie loves to share what she has learnt. Her workshops are designed to be welcoming, practical, and empowering—giving participants the skills, confidence, and curiosity to continue exploring bookbinding long after the class ends.
