The First Chapter: Print & Bind Weekend
Create a collection of unique hand-bound books using specially printed letterpress pages.
Spend a day or a weekend exploring the connection between letterpress printing and bookbinding at the Wellington Centre for Book Arts.
This special workshop offers a rare opportunity to work with pages printed on traditional letterpress equipment and transform them into a collection of unique hand-bound books and paper objects.
Participants attending on Saturday will hand-set their own name in metal type, ink the type, and print a personalised colophon sheet that will be incorporated into one of their finished bindings. The remainder of the printed material will be printed in advance, allowing participants to focus on creating and binding a range of beautiful book forms.
The Sunday workshop explores different folded and sewn structures using a fresh selection of pre-printed letterpress materials, ensuring that participants attending both days enjoy two distinct creative experiences.
While each day can be booked individually, the workshops have been designed as a complementary pair and are best experienced together. Participants attending the full weekend will build a larger collection of finished work, gain experience with a wider range of structures, and enjoy a deeper immersion in the world of book arts.
Whether you are completely new to bookbinding or already have some experience, this workshop offers the chance to create beautiful handmade objects, develop practical skills, and connect with others who share a love of paper, books, printing and making.
Suitable for beginners and returning makers alike.
While each workshop may be booked separately, they have been designed as a complementary weekend experience and are best enjoyed together. Places are strictly limited, and preference will be given to participants wishing to attend both days. A place is only confirmed once payment has been received.
