~8 miles round trip
~4,000 ft elevation gain
Steady endurance pace --I will go slow and take a lot of breaks**
Focus on pacing, mountain fitness, and efficiency
This hike is great for:
building endurance
training for bigger peaks. I have been going up & down this peak (I am training for a day hike Shasta)
You can go to the peak without snowshoes (Your feet can get wet) but I carried snowshoes and used them last weekend.
HIKING ROUTE:
We will start the challenging hike at Rocky Canyon Trailhead at an elevation of 5,900 feet east of a creek next to HWY 50, then strenuously hike up via Rock Canyon Trail for about 4 miles with an elevation gain of nearly 4,100 feet to the summit of Pyramid Peak at 9,983 feet above sea level. After the trees slowly thin out above 9,000 feet, the views begin to open up to the west, south, and east of Pyramid Peak. Once we reach the summit after rock scamble for the last 300 feet, we will enjoy a 360 view of alpine lakes and other peaks in Desolation Wilderness, the forested westen slopes of the Sierra to the west and south, Lake Tahoe and Carson Range to the east, the Carson and Cathedral Ranges to the southeast, and on a clear day the Great Central Valley and Coastal Ranges to the west. After spending some time on Pyramid Peak, we rock scamble down for about 300 feet elevation loss, then hike downhill on via Rock Canyon Trail for about 4 miles back to the starting point.
HIKING ESSENTIALS:
Hiking shoes or boots with good traction are extremely necessary for this hike, hiking poles, snowshoe on top, plenty of water, water filter **We can get the waterfall to drink
, lunch, snacks, first aid kit, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, etc ), and cell phones for emergencies.
