Sunrise at Playland: (very) early photo walk in Rye, NY
Details
This early walk is centered on photographing the sunrise and the way the rising sun reflects off the buildings along the shoreline at Rye Playland. Light begins subtly, then builds quickly, creating moments where structure, reflection, and atmosphere come together.
We’ll meet at 4:45 AM at the Dog Beach parking lot. Light will begin to shift around 4:55 AM, leading into a 5:24 AM sunrise.
From the meeting spot, we’ll move toward the pier and boardwalk to find a position to photograph the rising sun and its reflection off the beachside structures.
After sunrise, we’ll continue with a relaxed walk along the boardwalk, focusing on smaller details and close-up scenes while the light is still low.
Neutral density and polarizer filters can be helpful if you have them. A tripod is also useful for slower shutter speeds, but not required.
All cameras are welcome, including phones.
This is not a workshop or critique group. There’s no competition and no pressure to perform.
Please dress warm, as early mornings are still chilly near the water. Expect a slow, deliberate walk with frequent stops.
If weather does not cooperate, the rain date for this event is Sunday, June 7th.
