Renoir - 2025 Asian Film Festival Film
Details
๐ Film:
Renoir (2025) โ a beautifully photographed, emotionally rich coming-of-age drama set in suburban Tokyo in 1987. Film is 118 mins long, Japanese but subtitled.
๐ Synopsis (without major spoilers):
11-year-old Fuki lives in a Tokyo suburb in the summer of โ87. Her father is battling cancer, her mother is juggling work and worry, and Fuki finds herself increasingly distanced from the world of adults โ retreating into her own inner life, fantasies, and a subtle undercurrent of telepathic curiosity.
The film explores family, grief, disconnection, and the strange ways children make sense of the adult world.
๐ฎ Why youโll love it / what to look for:
- A rich 1980s Tokyo setting (bubble-economy Japan) that underpins the emotional weight of the story.
- A sensitive performance by newcomer Yui Suzuki (as Fuki) and a mature directorial voice from Hayakawa.
- A film that blends realism and quiet fantasy โ subtle, contemplative, and visually thoughtful.
- Great springboard for discussion: how do children perceive adult crises? What does isolation feel like? How does setting (time + place) shape our internal experience?
๐ฃ Post-screening discussion:
Letโs chat about:
- Which scenes stood out and why?
- The role of memory, fantasy, and โtelepathyโ (real or metaphorical) in the film.
- The era of the film: 1987 Japan โ what does that add to the story?
- Connections to our own childhoods: how we filtered adult worries through our small worlds.
- Visual & sonic atmosphere: how did the film use setting, light, sound?
