Taat: Making of - From idea to Steam!
Details
Hello Everyone!
We are excited to invite you to our next SKG Java Meetup, where one of our community members will share his journey of building and publishing a game on Steam! 🎮
Topic
Side projects are easy to start. Finishing them is the real challenge.
And when it comes to games... making it to Steam is a whole different level!
Taat started as a simple joke project, inspired by a YouTube tutorial, and evolved into a fully released Sokoban-style puzzle game with 100 handcrafted levels, achievements, cloud saves, and Steam integration!
In this talk, we’ll take a journey through 5 years of building a game from scratch - without prior game development experience - and explore what it really takes to turn a Game idea into a finished product.
We will cover:
- The motivation behind creating a PC game as a side project
- Choosing the right programming language and engine (Lua / LOVE2D)
- Learning (way) too many new things along the way
- Game and level design challenges
- The famous “ninety–ninety rule” in practice
- A retrospective: what went right (and wrong)
- What’s next after publishing on Steam
💡 Whether you’re working on your own side project, thinking of starting one, or just curious about game development, this session will give you a real-world, honest perspective.
