Beyond JMeter: From Simple Gatling Implementations to Advanced Techniques, gRPC Performance & Live Monitoring by Varvara Menta & Rafail Tatsis

In this talk, we will walk through the full evolution of building performance tests with Gatling, starting from simple implementations and progressing to advanced, real-world engineering techniques.
We begin with an introduction to Gatling and a structured JMeter vs Gatling comparison, highlighting key architectural differences, strengths, limitations, and the decision criteria for choosing the right tool.
We then explore Gatling’s core concepts—from initial implementation to execution workflows—and discuss how to design maintainable and scalable load-testing suites.
As we move into advanced territory, we will cover:
- performance testing gRPC services and how to address their unique challenges
- implementing a Custom Data Writer for InfluxDB
- generating requests by leveraging developers’ code as a dependency
A key highlight of the session is live performance monitoring using InfluxDB & Grafana, including practical guidance on creating meaningful dashboards and interpreting metrics during active test runs.
