Switching it up this week. I’m in the mood for Tavern style dining and wood-fired cooking, someplace unpretentious and evokes a chill laid-back vibe. We’re headed to St. Anselm in DC (Union Market)

FOOD: St. Anselm DC is the sister restaurant to its original location in Brooklyn, NY, and is known for its wood-fired cooking, which features a steakhouse backbone, as well as strong vegetables and sides.

Late 2025 and 2026 reviews often highlight the butcher’s steak as a go-to value pick, plus the smoked pork chop for texture and flavor. Oysters and seasonal small plates show up often in recent writeups as strong starters. Sides get a lot of love in reviews too, especially the beef-fat mashed potatoes and roasted carrots. Ordering a mix and sharing works well here. Very good cocktails and a nice eclectic wine program here.

SPACE: St. Anselm has a warm, lively dining room in the Union Market area with an open-kitchen feel and a steady pace. Generally, it's considered busy but has a friendly vibe. Good for small groups. Noise trends lively, so the table will feel energetic. Conversation is still workable, especially at an early evening seating.

CLOSEST METRO:

• NoMa-Gallaudet U (Red Line) is the closest major stop. Exit toward Morse Street NE, walk northeast on Morse Street NE to 550 Morse St NE, just inside Union Market. The walk is about 6–8 minutes.
• For directions using the Metro, try using the Plan a Trip feature at the WMATA website (click on your preferred Metro station then at the Station page level click "Plan a Trip".

PARKING: Parking options include Union Market valet on 5th & Neal Streets NE and nearby garages. Street parking can be limited, especially on weekend evenings—Metro or rideshare is recommended.
