See all- The Beaver Den - scientific literacy book clubBeaverWorks - Downstairs Conference Room (Beaver Den), Bend, OR
Each month, we select a published research paper relating to beavers to read, critically evaluate, and discuss.
Beavers are fascinating animals with so many mechanisms of influencing the world. Closely examining primary literature will give us a deeper understanding of how their influences on other species and environmental processes are studied and established. Scientific writing can be impenetrable, but discussing it together is a great way to enhance understanding and grow curiosity for the details that others notice.
May is a busy time for Beaver Works planting projects! Why are we planting willows, and how does that relate to addressing the factors limiting beaver success in our landscapes? The authors of this month's paper use the Beaver Restoration Assessment Tool (BRAT) to determine whether a widespread loss in beaver population corresponds to a similar scale decline in the capacity to sustain beaver on the landscape. How can understanding historic beaver populations, surface water, sediment storage, and vegetation help us identify opportunities for and barriers to beaver-related restoration now?
Join us to discuss:
